It is interesting, that the first theatre in Odessa was built and opened on February 10, in 1810, and the project was created by the architect Thomas de Tomon. At that time the theatre was like white antique temple with the facade directed to the port. The concert hall could take a total of 800 spectators at the same time. In the 20th century the theatre has become Opera, and before that it was called the City theatre.
The building of the City theatre was completely destroyed in 64 years after its opening for the cause of the fire. Viennese architects Helmer and Fellner took part in the creation of the new Opera house in Odessa, they also worked on the creation of theatres in Dresden, Vienna, Zagreb and Budapest. The details were not initially have been worked out carefully enough, and this took local architects Gonsirovsky, Dmitrenko and Bernardazzi.
Odessa Opera Theater was put into operation on September 15, 1887, and already on October 1 of the same year it has opened. At that time it was the first building is with central heating and electric illumination by the Edison Company.
Imagination is striking by elegant building in the Renaissance style with elements of Baroque architecture, featuring their wealth and luxury. Above the facade of the theater there is situated Melpomene – muse of singing and tragedy.
The hall of Odessa Opera theater is decorated in the style of the French Rococo, with the ornamental pattern that is decorated with fine gold. The ornament is so carefully executed, that one and the same pattern is not repeated anywhere else. On the ceiling there is a magnificent chandelier, as well as four pictures of Leffler, depicting scenes from the works of Shakespeare.
On the stage of Odessa academic theatre of Opera and ballet were performed their works such composers as Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, here the famous Anna Pavlova danced, and Krushelnytska and Fyodor Chaliapin sang. Unfortunately, no one can go to the theathre on excursion, but you can take a ticket on the performance – and you’ll admire the internal appearance of the theatre and enjoy the show.
