Kamyanets-Podilsky is a modern city located in the south of Khmelnitsky region in the valley Smotrych River. Kamyanets-Podilsky is the second largest city in Khmelnitsky region after the regional centre.
The old town is situated on the rocks. If you look at these places you’ll see how the Smotrich River forms a kind of loop. The city is surrounded by bastions, watchtowers with loopholes. The first mention of the city of Kamyanets-Podilsky in the history dates back to 1062 year. At various times the town was under the control of the Principality of Galicia–Volhynia, it belonged to Poland, Lithuania, Russian Empire and even Turkey. The walls of the ancient city remember a lot of destructions, rebuildings, but all this made the special structure and unique architecture.
The name of Kamyanets-Podilsky is easy to translate. The town was named for the phrase "stone on the border" in Ukrainian words.
